The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 arise, and warn! 2 And thy Lord do thou magnify! 3 And thy garments keep free from stain! 4 stay away from sins 5 Nor expect, in giving, any increase (for thyself)! 6 And for the good-will of thy Lord be thou patient. 7 For when the Trump is sounded 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 For the disbelievers - not easy. 10 Leave Me (to deal) with him whom I created lonely, 11 And give him vast riches, 12 And sons to be by his side!- 13 and to whose life I gave so wide a scope: 14 and who still desires more. 15 Never will he receive more. He has been hostile to Our revelations. 16 [and so] I shall constrain him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 Verily, he thought and plotted; 18 (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! 19 What an evil plan he has made! 20 Then he beheld, 21 Then he frowned and scowled; 22 Then he turned back and was big with pride, 23 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 24 Nothing more than the speech of a man!" 25 I shall surely roast him in Sakar; 26 And what knoweth thou that which the Scorching Fire? 27 It spares not, neither leaves alone 28 It glows and burns the skin. 29 Over it are Nineteen. 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
