The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O, you, wrapped in your cloak, 1 arise and give warning! 2 and exalt your Lord, 3 And your garments purify! 4 And all defilement shun! 5 Do not give, thinking to gain greater 6 and for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 So when the Trumpet will be blown. 8 Surely that day will be a day of anguish, 9 Dolorous for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me Alone (to deal) with whom I created Alone (without any means, i.e. Al-Walid bin Al-Mughirah Al-Makhzumi)! 11 And to whom I granted extensive wealth 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 and whom I have provided with every resource, 14 yet he is eager that I increase him. 15 Never! For he is an enemy to Our signs! 16 I shall inflict on him hardship, 17 Indeed he thought, and inwardly decided. 18 So let him be cursed! How he plotted! 19 May be then be accursed, how he plotted! 20 Then he looked round; 21 Then frowned and grimaced. 22 Then turned he back, and grew stiff-necked. 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 “This is nothing but the speech of a man.” 25 Him shall I fling unto the burning. 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It does not allow anyone to live, and neither does it leave anyone to die; 28 scorching the flesh; 29 Above it are nineteen. 30 We have appointed none but angels as the keepers of the Fire, and We have not made their number but as a trial for the unbelievers so that those who have been endowed with the Book will be convinced and the believers' faith will increase, and neither those who have been endowed with the Book nor the believers will fall into any doubt. As for those in whose hearts there is a sickness as well as the unbelievers, they will say: “What did Allah aim at by this strange parable?” Thus does Allah let whomsoever He pleases to go astray, and directs whomsoever He pleases to the Right Way. And none knows the hosts of your Lord but He. (And Hell has only been mentioned here) that people may take heed. 31
