The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O thou shrouded in thy mantle, 1 Arise and warn 2 And proclaim the Purity of your Lord. 3 and purify your clothing, 4 and flee from the statues! 5 And do not favour others in order to receive more. 6 But for your Lord be patient. 7 When the trumpet is sounded,. 8 So that is a tough day. 9 Dolorous for the unbelievers. 10 LEAVE Me alone [to deal] with him whom I have created alone, 11 And to whom I granted extensive wealth 12 And children to be by his side! 13 And made several preparations for him. 14 And who yet coveteth that shall increase. 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 We shall make him suffer the torment of hell without relief. 17 Behold, [when Our messages are conveyed to one who is bent on denying the truth,] he reflects and meditates [as to how to disprove them] 18 and thus he destroys himself, the way he meditates: 19 Again, ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme? 20 Then he beheld, 21 Then he frowned and he scowled; 22 and he turned his back and behaved arrogantly 23 And said: "This is nothing but the magic of old, 24 "This is nothing but the word of a human being!" 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 and what will teach thee what is Sakar? 27 It leaves nothing, nor does it spare; 28 and it burns the flesh. 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
