He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 when the blind man approached him, 2 You never know. Perhaps he wanted to purify himself, 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and that the admonition might profit him? 4 As for him who was indifferent, 5 You pay full attention, 6 though it is not thy concern, if he does not cleanse himself. 7 But as for him who cometh unto thee with earnest purpose 8 and fearfully, 9 You neglect. 10 NAY, VERILY, these [messages] are but a reminder: 11 So whoever wills, let him pay attention to it. 12 It is contained in scrolls highly honoured, 13 most exalted and purified, 14 (Set down) by scribes 15 Honourable and Pious and Just. 16 Woe to man! What hath made him reject Allah; 17 Of what did He create him? 18 From a drop of seed. He createth him and proportioneth him, 19 and then makes it easy for him to go through life; 20 He will then send him to death and have him laid in the grave. 21 Then when He listeth, He shall raise him to life. 22 No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him. 23 Then let mankind look at his food - 24 How We poured down water in torrents, 25 and cleaved the earth, cleaving it asunder; 26 and therein made the grains to grow 27 and grape vines and vegetables, 28 And the olive and the palm, 29 and burgeoning enclosed gardens 30 And fruits and grasses: 31 Provision for you and your cattle. 32 Then when cometh the Deafening Cry 33 on that Day a man shall flee from his own brother, 34 and from his mother and father, 35 And his spouse and his son-- 36 For every one of them on that Day shall be business enough to occupy 37 On that day faces will be bright as dawn, 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 And other faces, that Day, will be dust-stained; 40 Blackness overcoming them. 41 They will be the unbelievers, transgressors. 42
