He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 What made you think that he will not grow in virtue, 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and that the admonition might profit him? 4 As for him who is not in want of any thing, 5 Unto him thou attendest. 6 And no blame is on you if he would not purify himself 7 As for the one who comes to you earnestly (striving for guidance). 8 and in awe [of God] 9 You neglect. 10 No indeed, this is a Reminder; 11 So let whosoever will pay heed to it, 12 (Contained) in honoured pages, 13 Exalted, purified, 14 [borne] by the hands of messengers 15 Honourable and obedient. 16 [But only too often] man destroys himself: how stubbornly does he deny the truth! 17 Of what thing hath He created him? 18 From a drop of liquid; He created him and then set several measures for him. 19 and then makes it easy for him to go through life; 20 He will then send him to death and have him laid in the grave. 21 Then, when He willed, He brought him out. (As during the night of Holy Prophet’s ascension, when all the Prophets gathered behind him in the Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem. Or when Allah will raise everyone on the Day of Resurrection.) 22 Nay; but he has not done what He bade him. 23 Let the human being think about (how We produce) his food. 24 How We poured down water in torrents, 25 And We split the earth in clefts, 26 then caused the grain to grow out of it, 27 And grapes and fodder, 28 and olive trees and date palms 29 and dense-tree'd gardens, 30 And fruits and herbage: 31 an enjoyment for you and your flocks. 32 But when the Shout cometh 33 upon the day when a man shall flee from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father 35 And his spouse and his son-- 36 Everyone on that Day will have affairs to keep him occupied. 37 Many a face will be glittering on that day. 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 And (many) faces on that day, on them shall be dust, 40 Covered with the blackness (of shame): 41 These will be the faces of the sinful disbelievers. 42
