He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 when the blind man approached him, 2 And what could let you know? Perhaps he (comes to hear you) to be purified. 3 or have been reminded [of the truth,] and helped by this reminder. 4 But the self-sufficient, 5 To him dost thou attend; 6 And you have nothing to lose if he does not become pure. 7 As for the one who comes to you earnestly (striving for guidance). 8 and in awe of God 9 you ignore him. 10 Nay! surely it is an admonishment. 11 So whoever wills, let him pay attention to it. 12 (It is) in Books held (greatly) in honour, 13 exalted, purified, 14 Written by the hands of emissaries. 15 Noble and dutiful. 16 Cursed be man! how ungrateful is he! 17 Of what substance God created him? 18 Out of a drop of sperm He creates him, and thereupon determines his nature, 19 Then eased the way for him. 20 and in the end He causes him to die and brings him to the grave; 21 and then, if it be His will, He shall raise him again to life, 22 Nay, but (man) hath not done what He commanded him. 23 Let man consider his food: 24 How We poured down water in torrents, 25 And We split the earth in clefts, 26 and therein made the grains to grow 27 grapes, and fresh fodder, 28 And olives and date palms, 29 And garden-closes of thick foliage 30 And fruits and herbage 31 A provision for you and for your cattle. 32 But when there comes the Deafening Blast 33 On the Day whereon a man shall flee from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father 35 his consort, his sons, 36 Every man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others). 37 [Some] faces, that Day, will be bright - 38 laughing and joyful, 39 And faces on that Day! upon them shall be gloom. 40 Blackness will cover them: 41 Those, they are the unbelievers, the immoral. 42
