Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Ha Mim 1 The perspicuous Book is witness 2 (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- 3 on that night every wise decree is specified 4 As commands from Us. It is indeed We who send (messengers), 5 as a Mercy from your Lord. Surely He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; if you people believe. 7 There is no god but He. He quickeneth and causeth to die: your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 Yet they are in doubt, playing. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. 11 [They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers." 12 How can a warning benefit them? The Apostle who explained all things clearly had come to them, 13 Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. 14 Indeed, We will remove the torment for a little. Indeed, you [disbelievers] will return [to disbelief]. 15 The day that We shall seize them with a grievous hold, We will indeed castigate them. 16 ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. 17 Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 18 And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. 19 And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" 22 "Journey by night with My devotees," (it was said); "you will certainly be pursued. 23 and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" 24 How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, 25 and fields of grain, and noble dwellings, 26 And pleasant things wherein they took delight! 27 Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not over them, nor were they respited. 29
