He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 from a blind man who had come up to him. 2 But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him? 4 As for him who considers himself free from need (of you), 5 to him didst thou give thy whole attention, 6 though you will not be questioned even if he never purifies himself. 7 As for him who comes to you striving (after goodness), 8 And is afraid (of Allah and His Punishment), 9 Him thou neglectest! 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 So whosoever willeth - let him be admonished therewlth. 12 Inscribed in Writs honoured, 13 Exalted and holy, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 Honourable and Virtuous. 16 Cursed be man! how ungrateful is he! 17 Of what thing hath He created him? 18 Out of a drop of sperm He creates him, and thereupon determines his nature, 19 and then makes it easy for him to go through life; 20 then makes him to die, and buries him, 21 Then, when He willed, He brought him out. (As during the night of Holy Prophet’s ascension, when all the Prophets gathered behind him in the Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem. Or when Allah will raise everyone on the Day of Resurrection.) 22 Nay, but man did not fulfil what Allah had enjoined upon him. 23 Let Man consider his nourishment. 24 How We poured down water in torrents, 25 Then split the earth in clefts 26 how We made the grain to grow, 27 together with grapes and vegetables, 28 Olives and dates, 29 and gardens dense with foliage, 30 And fruits and herbage 31 for you and for your herds to delight in. 32 AND SO, when the piercing call [of resurrection] is heard 33 on that Day a man shall flee from his own brother, 34 And his mother and his father, 35 and his consort and his children; 36 For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him. 37 on that Day some faces will be beaming, 38 Laughing and full of joy, 39 And other faces that Day will be dust-stained, 40 Darkness shall cover them. 41 These will be the unbelievers, the wicked. 42
