He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and then turned away 1 when the blind came to him. 2 And what could let you know? Perhaps he (comes to hear you) to be purified. 3 or have been reminded [of the truth,] and helped by this reminder. 4 As for him who thinketh himself independent, 5 to him didst thou give thy whole attention, 6 although it is not for you to be concerned if he remained unpurified. 7 As for him who comes to you striving (after goodness), 8 and in awe [of God] 9 From him you are distracted. 10 By no means (should it be so)! For it is indeed a Message of instruction: 11 So whoso wills may give heed to it. 12 (It is) in Books held (greatly) in honour, 13 Exalted, purified, 14 Written by the hands of emissaries. 15 Honourable and obedient. 16 Accursed be man! How stubbornly he denies the Truth. 17 From what substance did He create him? 18 Of a sperm-drop He created him, and determined him, 19 Then He eased the way for him; 20 He will then send him to death and have him laid in the grave. 21 and then, whenever He wishes, He will raise him back to life. 22 Nay; but he has not done what He bade him. 23 Let Man consider his nourishment. 24 We send down abundant water, 25 And We split the earth in clefts, 26 And We cause therein the grain to grow, 27 grapes, vegetables, 28 And the olive and the palm, 29 the densely tree'd gardens, 30 and fruits, and pastures, 31 for you and for your herds to delight in. 32 Then, when there comes As-Sakhkhah (the Day of Resurrection's second blowing of Trumpet), 33 on that Day a man shall flee from his own brother, 34 Mother and father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 on that Day each will be occupied with his own business, making him oblivious of all save himself. 37 Some faces will on that Day be bright with happiness, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news. 39 And other faces, on that day, with dust upon them, 40 and overcast with gloom: 41 Those! they are the infidels, the ungodly. 42
