He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ The Prophet frowned and turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man. 2 What made you think that he will not grow in virtue, 3 or he might be mindful and good counsel might avail him. 4 As to one who regards Himself as self-sufficient, 5 you attend to him, 6 although it is not for you to be concerned if he remained unpurified. 7 But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge] 8 And with fear (in his heart), 9 You neglect. 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 Let him who will, pay heed to it. 12 It is set down on honoured pages, 13 exalted, purified, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 noble and pious. 16 Woe to man! What hath made him reject Allah; 17 From what substance did He create him? 18 Of a small seed; He created him, then He made him according to a measure, 19 then eased his path for him, 20 Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave; 21 Then when He listeth, He shall raise him to life. 22 Certainly, he has not duly fulfilled His commands. 23 Let man reflect on the food he eats. 24 That We watered it in abundance. 25 and then We cleaved the earth asunder. 26 Then We cause to grow therein the grain, 27 grapes, and fresh fodder, 28 And olives and date palms, 29 Orchards thick with trees, 30 And fruits and Abba (herbage, etc.), 31 an enjoyment for you and your flocks. 32 So when the deafening Shout arrives, 33 On that day man will run away from his brother. 34 mother, father, 35 As well as his wife and children. 36 Every man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others). 37 Some faces on that day shall shine 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news; 39 And faces on that Day! upon them shall be gloom. 40 Darkness shall cover them. 41 Those! they are the infidels, the ungodly. 42
