Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the dawn 1 And [by] ten nights 2 and the even and the odd, 3 And by the Night when it passeth away;- 4 Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception? 5 Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with Ad, 6 (And) the tall giants of Iram? 7 the like of whom has never been reared in all the land? 8 And with the Thamud (people), who cut out (huge) rocks in the valley?- 9 And with Fir'awn, owner of the stakes 10 who all were insolent in the land 11 So they made great mischief therein? 12 Then their Lord unloosed upon them the lash of chastisement. 13 Truly your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him, and honours him, and blesses him, then he says, 'My Lord has honoured me.' 15 And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!” 16 (Since wealth does not necessarily guarantee everlasting happiness) then why do you not show kindness to the orphans, 17 or urge one another to feed the destitute? 18 And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether, 19 And love wealth with all your heart. 20 No indeed! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 and thy Lord comes, and the angels rank on rank, 22 And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance? 23 He shall say: O! would that I had sent before for (this) my life! 24 So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment, 25 nor will any bind as He binds. 26 O the contented soul! 27 Return unto thy Lord, content in His good pleasure! 28 Enter thou among My bondmen! 29 and enter My Paradise.” 30
