Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By oath of the (particular) dawn. 1 And the ten nights, 2 by the even and the odd, 3 and by the night when it departs. 4 Truly in that there is an oath for those who possess understanding. 5 (Muhammad), consider how your Lord dealt with the tribe of Ad, 6 With many-columned Iram, 7 the like of which was never created in the countries? 8 And with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley; 9 (Also consider the people of) the Pharaoh who victimized people by placing them on the stake, 10 who all were insolent in the land 11 spreading in them much corruption? 12 Wherefore thy Lord poured on them the scourge of His torment. 13 Truly your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him by exalting him and bestowing His bounties upon him, he says: “My Lord has exalted me.” 15 but when He tests him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Lord has disgraced me." 16 But nay, nay, [O men, consider all that you do and fail to do:] you are not generous towards the orphan, 17 And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor. 18 and you devour the inheritance [of others] with devouring greed, 19 And ye love riches with exceeding love. 20 But no; when the earth is ground to powder, 21 and (when you find yourself) in the presence of your Lord and the rows and rows of angels, your greed for riches will certainly be of no avail to you. 22 And when hell is brought that day – on that day will man reflect, but where is the time now to think? 23 He will say: "Ah! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my (Future) Life!" 24 On that day the punishment of God and His detention will be unparalleled. 25 And His bonds will be such as none other can bind. 26 O satisfied soul, 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], 28 Enter thou among My bondmen! 29 yea, enter thou My paradise!" 30
