Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the dawn 1 and ten nights (of pilgrimage or the last ten days of Ramadan), 2 The multiple and the one, 3 and by the night when it moves on towards daybreak (reward and retribution in the next life is an absolute reality). 4 Considering all this - could there be, to anyone endowed with reason, a [more] solemn evidence of the truth? 5 Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with Ad, 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 The like of which were not created in the land? 8 and with the Thamud, who cut out [huge] rocks in the valley, 9 And with Firaun, who used to crucify. 10 [It was they] who transgressed all bounds of equity all over their lands, 11 And multiplied therein corruption. 12 Thus, your Lord afflicted them with torment; 13 Lo! thy Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him and then is gracious and provides good things for him, he says: "My Lord has been gracious to me." 15 But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!" 16 But nay, nay, [O men, consider all that you do and fail to do:] you are not generous towards the orphan, 17 and do not urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And you devour (others') inheritance greedily, 19 and you ardently love wealth. 20 When the earth is crushed into small pieces 21 And your Lord comes with the angels in rows, 22 And hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)? 23 He will say: "Ah! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my (Future) Life!" 24 For, none can make suffer as He will make suffer [the sinners] on that Day, 25 And no one binds like He does! 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 Return thou unto thy Sustainer, well-pleased [and] pleasing [Him]: 28 "Enter thou, then, among My devotees! 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
