Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the dawn 1 and ten nights, 2 And the Even and the Odd, 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 There is indeed in them (the above oaths) sufficient proofs for men of understanding (and that, they should avoid all kinds of sins and disbeliefs, etc.)! 5 Have you not heard how your Lord dealt with Aad? 6 (And) the tall giants of Iram? 7 The like of which was not created in the lands; 8 And with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the vale, 9 And Pharaoh, of the pegs (impaling his victims)? 10 who transgressed in the countries of the world 11 and caused much corruption in them: 12 So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment. 13 Your Lord is certainly in wait. 14 BUT AS FOR man, whenever his Sustainer tries him by His generosity and by letting him enjoy a life of ease, he says, "My Sustainer has been [justly] generous towards me"; 15 But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me." 16 (Since wealth does not necessarily guarantee everlasting happiness) then why do you not show kindness to the orphans, 17 And urge not on the feeding of AlMiskin (the poor)! 18 and you devour the inheritance greedily, 19 and you ardently love wealth. 20 But no; when the earth is ground to powder, 21 And thy Lord shall come with angels, rank on rank, 22 and Gehenna (Hell) is brought near on that Day the human will remember, and how shall the Reminder be for him? 23 He will say, "Oh, would that I had provided beforehand for my life!" 24 But on that day shall no one chastise with (anything like) His chastisement, 25 and Allah will bind as none other can bind. 26 [But to the righteous, God will say], "O soul at peace, 27 Return thou unto thy Sustainer, well-pleased [and] pleasing [Him]: 28 Join My worshipers and 29 Enter My Paradise." 30
