Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 And by oath of ten nights. 2 by the even and the odd, 3 Consider the night as it runs its course! 4 Is there in that an oath for a mindful man? 5 Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad, 6 (The people of) Aram, possessors of lofty buildings, 7 the like of whom has never been reared in all the land? 8 And with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley; 9 And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes? - 10 Who terrorised the region, 11 and spread much corruption in the land. 12 Then their Lord unloosed upon them the lash of chastisement. 13 Indeed, your Lord is in observation. 14 As for man - when his Lord proveth him and so honoureth him and is bounteous unto him, then he saith: 'my Lord hath honoured me, 15 But when He tests him by restricting his provision, he says: 'My Lord has humiliated me' 16 By no means! But ye honour not the orphan, 17 And urge not on the feeding of the poor. 18 and you greedily devour the inheritance of the weak, 19 And ye love riches with exceeding love. 20 Nay! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 And comes your Lord, and angels row on row, 22 And hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)? 23 He will say, “Alas – if only I had sent some good deeds ahead, during my lifetime!” 24 But on that Day none will punish as He (Allah) will punish, 25 none shall bind as He binds. 26 [To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul, 27 Return unto thine Lord well pleased and well-pleasing. 28 Join My servants. 29 Enter My Paradise." 30
