Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn, 1 And the Ten Nights, 2 And [by] the even [number] and the odd 3 and by the night when it moves on towards daybreak (reward and retribution in the next life is an absolute reality). 4 Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent? 5 Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad, 6 the people of the huge columned city of Eram 7 the like of which has never been created in the land, 8 And the tribe of Thamud, who hewed rocks in the valley. 9 And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes? - 10 Who committed inordinacy in the cities, 11 And made therein much mischief. 12 So your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment. 13 indeed, your Lord is ever watchful. 14 So man, whenever his Lord tests him by giving him honour and favours – thereupon he says, “My Lord has honoured me.” 15 But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me." 16 (Since wealth does not necessarily guarantee everlasting happiness) then why do you not show kindness to the orphans, 17 And do not urge one another to feed the needy. 18 Why do you take away the inheritance of others indiscriminately 19 And you harbour intense love for wealth. 20 No indeed! When the earth is crushed and ground to dust, 21 And your Lord comes and (also) the angels in ranks, 22 On that day, hell will be brought closer and the human being will come to his senses, but this will be of no avail to him. 23 He will say, "Oh, would that I had provided beforehand for my life!" 24 None can punish as He will punish on that day, 25 And His bonds will be such as none other can bind. 26 'O soul at peace, 27 Return to your Lord well-pleased (with your blissful destination), well-pleasing (to your Lord). 28 Enter thou among My bondmen! 29 into My Paradise. 30
