Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn 1 By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah). 2 Consider the multiple and the One! 3 and by the night when it departs. 4 Indeed in that there is an oath for a man of sense. 5 Bethinkest thou not in what wise thy Lord did with the 'A'ad: 6 the people of the huge columned city of Eram 7 The like of which was not built in the cities, 8 And the tribe of Thamud, who hewed rocks in the valley. 9 And with Firaun, who used to crucify. 10 led rebellious lives, 11 And who then spread a lot of turmoil in them. 12 so your Lord unleashed on them the scourge of punishment: 13 Lo! thy Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him and then is gracious and provides good things for him, he says: "My Lord has been gracious to me." 15 But when He tries him by restraining his means, he says: "My Lord despises me." 16 But nay, nay, [O men, consider all that you do and fail to do:] you are not generous towards the orphan, 17 and you do not urge one another to feed the needy, 18 and you devour the inheritance with greed, 19 and you ardently love wealth. 20 But no; when the earth is ground to powder, 21 And thy Lord shall come with angels, rank on rank, 22 And when hell is brought that day – on that day will man reflect, but where is the time now to think? 23 He will say, "Would that I had done some good deeds for this life". 24 Then on that Day Allah will chastise as none other can chastise; 25 and Allah will bind as none other can bind. 26 (It will be said to the pious): "O (you) the one in (complete) rest and satisfaction! 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], 28 Join My servants. 29 into My Paradise. 30
