The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Makkah); 1 in which you are now living 2 And [by] the father and that which was born [of him], 3 that We have created man into a life of toil and trial. 4 Deemest he that none will overpower him? 5 He says (boastfully): "I have wasted wealth in abundance!" 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes? 8 a tongue, and two lips, 9 And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways? 10 But he hath made no haste on the path that is steep. 11 And what shall make thee understand that which the steep is? 12 (It is) to free a slave, 13 Or the giving of food in a day of privation 14 to an orphaned relative 15 and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) 16 Then he is of those who believe and charge one another to show patience, and charge one another to show compassion. 17 They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed). 18 But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand. 19 On them is fire closed over. 20
