The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ NAY! I call to witness this land 1 and you are a lodger in this country. 2 and I swear by the parent and his offspring: 3 That We created man in toil and trouble. 4 Does he, then, think that no one has power over him? 5 He says: “I have squandered enormous wealth.” 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 And have shown him the two ways? 10 Yet he has not scaled the height. 11 Would that you knew what Aqaba is! 12 (It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc.) 13 the giving of food upon the day of hunger 14 To the orphan with claims of relationship, 15 Or a needy person in misery 16 and to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion. 17 Those who do so are the people of the right hand, 18 But those who disbelieved in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), they are those on the Left Hand (the dwellers of Hell). 19 Over them shall be Fire closing round. 20
