The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ No, I swear by this country (Mecca), 1 And thou art an indweller of this city - 2 or by the great father and his wonderful son (Abraham and Ishmael) 3 We created the human in fatigue. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth: 6 Thinks he that none sees him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes 8 and a tongue and two lips? 9 And shown unto him the two highways? 10 But he hath not attempted the Ascent - 11 Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is! - 12 It is freeing someone's neck from slavery; 13 Or the giving of food in a day of hunger 14 To an orphan near of kin. 15 Or a needy person in misery 16 And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity. 17 Those who do so are the people of the right hand, 18 And those who disbelieve in Our signs, they are the Companions of the Left Hand; 19 Upon them shall be a Fire that will hem them in. 20
