The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 and thou art a lodger in this land; 2 And by oath of your forefather Ibrahim, and by you – his illustrious son! 3 We have certainly created man into hardship. 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth: 6 Does he then think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not appointed to him two eyes, 8 One tongue, and two lips, 9 Have We not shown him the ways of good and evil? 10 But he has not attempted the ascent. 11 And what will make you know the path that is steep? 12 (It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc.) 13 Or to feed in times of famine 14 To the orphan with claims of relationship, 15 Or to a Miskin (poor) afflicted with misery. 16 And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity. 17 They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed). 18 And those who denied Our signs, are the people of the left. 19 with the Fire closed above them. 20
