The people of 'Ad, too, rejected the messengers. 123 Their brother Hud asked them, "Why do you not have fear of God? 124 "Verily! I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 125 fear God, then, and obey me. 126 I ask no recompense of you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 127 "Do ye build a landmark on every high place to amuse yourselves? 128 and raise strong mansions as if you were to live forever? 129 When you assault, you assault like tyrants. 130 So guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me 131 Fear Him who has bestowed on you what you know, 132 He has given you flocks and sons, 133 "And gardens and springs. 134 for, verily, I fear lest suffering befall you on an awesome day!" 135 They said: "It is the same to us if you warn us or do not warn. 136 "This is no other than the false-tales and religion of the ancients, [Tafsir At-Tabari, Vol. 19, Page 97] 137 and we are not going to be chastised [for adhering to it]!" 138 So they belied him, so We destroyed them. Surely, in that there is a sign; yet most of them do not believe. 139 And lo! thy Lord, He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful. 140
