The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ No, I swear by this country (Mecca), 1 this land in which thou art free to dwell 2 and I swear by the parent and his offspring: 3 that We have created the human being to face a great deal of hardship. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 (He boasts and shows off) saying, "I have spent a great deal of money (for the cause of God)". 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue, and a pair of lips?- 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 But he hath made no haste on the path that is steep. 11 And what will make you comprehend what the uphill road is? 12 The freeing of a slave, 13 Or the feeding on a day of hunger. 14 The orphan near in relationship, 15 Or a needy person in misery 16 And to be of those who believe, and urge upon one another to persevere, and urge upon each other to be kind. 17 Such are they that have attained to righteousness; 18 As for those who disbelieve in Our revelations, they are the people of the left 19 [with] fire closing in upon them. 20
