The Sun (Al-Shams)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
I swear by the sun and its brilliance, 1 and by the moon as it follows it, 2 And the day when it shows it, 3 and by the night as it envelopes the sun; 4 and by the sky and by Him Who made it; 5 And the earth and Him Who spread it, 6 By the soul and Him Who propertioned it, 7 And inspired it (with conscience of) what is wrong for it and (what is) right for it. 8 To a happy state shall indeed attain he who causes this [self] to grow in purity, 9 And he has failed who instills it [with corruption]. 10 Thamud denied [their prophet] by reason of their transgression, 11 When the most wicked among them stood up in defiance. 12 So Allah's apostle said to them (Leave alone) Allah's she-camel, and (give) her (to) drink. 13 In response they belied him, and hamstrung the she camel – so Allah put ruin over them because of their sins and flattened their dwellings. 14 And He does not fear its coming behind (to take vengeance). 15
