The Night (Al-Layl)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And the day resplendent 2 By Him Who hath created the male and the female, 3 O men, you truly strive towards the most diverse ends! 4 As for he who gives and fears Allah 5 and believes in the finest, 6 We shall facilitate for him the Way to Bliss. 7 But as for him who is niggardly, and thinks that he is self-sufficient, 8 and have no faith in receiving any reward (from God). 9 We shall pave his way to hardship, 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 Surely upon Us rests the guidance, 12 And verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning. 13 I have now warned you of a Blazing Fire, 14 Which only the most wretched must endure, 15 Who denies and turns away. 16 and from which the most godfearing shall be removed, 17 one who gives his wealth to become purified, 18 And have in his mind no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 But only seeking the Countenance of his Lord the Most High. 20 And indeed, soon he will be very pleased. 21
