The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
By the night enshrouding 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 And by Who created the male and female, 3 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends). 4 For him that gives and fears (Allah) 5 And affirms goodness, 6 We will ease him toward ease. 7 But he who does not give and is unconcerned, 8 And denied the best matter, 9 Unto him therefore We shall Indeed make easy the path to hardship. 10 And his riches will not avail him when he falls headlong (into the Abyss). 11 Verily We take upon Ourselves to guide, 12 And indeed the Hereafter and this world both belong to Us. 13 Wherefore I have warned you of Fire flaming, 14 whereat none but the most wretched shall be roasted, 15 who gives the lie to the truth and turns away [from it]. 16 One who fears God shall be kept away from it -- 17 he that spends his possessions [on others] so that he might grow in purity 18 not as payment for any favours that he received, 19 Except the seeking of the pleasure of his Lord, the Most High. 20 And soon will they attain (complete) satisfaction. 21
