The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
By the night when it covers 1 by the day when it appears radiant, 2 And the creating of the male and the female, 3 That your endeavour is for different ends. 4 Yet he who gives to others and has fear, 5 and affirmed the Truth of goodness: 6 We will facilitate for him the easy end. 7 But as for him who is a miser, and self-sufficient, 8 And denied the best matter, 9 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery; 10 and what will his wealth avail him when he goes down [to his grave]? 11 Surely, it is for Us to provide guidance -- 12 And most surely Ours is the hereafter and the former. 13 I have warned you about the fierce blazing fire 14 None shall reach it but those most unfortunate ones 15 The one who denied and turned away. 16 For, distant from it shall remain he who is truly conscious of God: 17 he that spends his possessions [on others] so that he might grow in purity 18 and confers no favor upon anyone for recompense 19 but only out of a longing for the countenance of his Sustainer, the All-Highest: 20 And soon will they attain (complete) satisfaction. 21
