The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the night when it enshrouds, 1 By the day when it appeareth in glory, 2 And by oath of the One Who created the male and the female. 3 you strive in various ways. 4 As for one who gives [to others] and fears [God], 5 And believeth in goodness; 6 We shall ease the way of fortune for him. 7 But as for him who is a miser, and self-sufficient, 8 And rejects the best, 9 We will facilitate for him the difficult end. 10 And his substance will avail him not when he perisheth. 11 Surely Ours is it to show the way, 12 And truly, unto Us (belong) the last (Hereafter) and the first (this world). 13 Therefor have I warned you of the flaming Fire 14 None shall reach it but those most unfortunate ones 15 Who belieth and turneth away. 16 But save him who fears 17 [He] who gives [from] his wealth to purify himself 18 And no one has done a favour to him, for which he should be compensated. 19 Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High; 20 and such, indeed, shall in time be well-pleased. 21
