The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the night enshrouding 1 And the day when it shines in all its glory, 2 And [by] He who created the male and female, 3 That your endeavour is for different ends. 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 And testifieth to the Good, 6 observe piety, and believe in receiving rewards from God. 7 And for him who hoarded wealth and remained carefree, 8 And rejects goodness, 9 Unto him therefore We shall Indeed make easy the path to hardship. 10 And what will his wealth avail him when he falls? 11 Lo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance 12 and to Us belongs the Hereafter as well as the present world -- 13 and so I warn you of the raging fire 14 None shall enter it save the most wretched, 15 Who give the lie to Truth and turn their backs. 16 And avoid it shall the most pious, 17 he that spends his possessions [on others] so that he might grow in purity 18 And none hath with him any favour for reward, 19 but only to seek the good pleasure of his Lord Most High. 20 He verily will be content. 21
