Said the eminent among the people of Pharaoh, "Indeed, this is a learned magician 109 Who would expel you from your land. Now what do ye advise? 110 Others said: 'Put them off a while, he and his brother, and send forth to your cities gatherers 111 Who will bring you every learned magician." 112 And the magicians came unto Fir'awn. They said: surely there is for us a reward if we are the overcomers. 113 He said, "Yes, and, [moreover], you will be among those made near [to me]." 114 They said: O Musa! will you cast, or shall we be the first to cast? 115 'Throw' he replied. And when they threw, they bewitched the people's eyes and terrified them, and produced great sorcery. 116 Then We directed Moses: 'Now you throw your rod.' And lo! it swallowed up all their false devices. 117 ۞ whereupon the truth was established, and vain was proved all that they had been doing. 118 Pharaoh and his men were defeated and put to shame, 119 And the wizards fell down prostrate, 120 and said, "We believe in the Lord of the Universe, 121 the Lord of Moses and Aaron. 122 Pharaoh said, "You dare believe in Him before I have given you permission? Behold, this is indeed a plot which you have devised in this city in order to drive its people out. But you shall soon know the consequences, 123 I shall cut off your hands and feet on the opposite sides, and then crucify you all.' 124 They answered: "We have (in any case) to go back to our Lord. 125 "The only reason you have to hate us is that we believed in the signs of our Lord as they came to us. O our Lord, give us sufficient endurance that we may die submitting (to You)." 126
