Joseph's brothers arrived and presented themselves before him. He recognized them, but they did not know him. 58 And when he had given them their provisions, he said: 'Bring me a certain brother from your father. Do you not see that I give just measure and am the best of hosts? 59 "Now if ye bring him not to me, ye shall have no measure (of corn) from me, nor shall ye (even) come near me." 60 They said: We will strive to make his father yield in respect of him, and we are sure to do (it). 61 And he said to his servants: Put their money into their bags that they may recognize it when they go back to their family, so that they may come back. 62 So when they returned to their father, they said: O our father, the measure is withheld from us, therefore send with us our brother, (so that) we may get the measure, and we will most surely guard him. 63 He said, 'And shall I entrust him to you otherwise than as I entrusted before his brother to you? Why, God is the best guardian, and He is the most merciful of the merciful.' 64 And when they opened their goods, they found their money returned to them. They said: O our father! what (more) can we desire? This is our property returned to us, and we will bring corn for our family and guard our brother, and will have in addition the measure of a camel (load); this is an easy measure. 65 [Jacob] said, "Never will I send him with you until you give me a promise by Allah that you will bring him [back] to me, unless you should be surrounded by enemies." And when they had given their promise, he said, "Allah, over what we say, is Witness." 66 And he enjoined them: "My sons! Do not enter the city by one gate; rather enter it by different gates. I can be of no help to you against Allah. Allah's command alone prevails. In Him have I put my trust and in Him should all those who have faith put their trust." 67 But although they entered [Joseph's city] in the way their father had bidden them, this proved of no avail whatever to them against [the plan of] God but [His request] had served only to satisfy Jacob's heartfelt desire [to protect them]: for, behold, thanks to what We had imparted unto him, he was indeed endowed with the knowledge [that God's will must always prevail]; but most people know it not. 68
