The Hijjr Valley (Al-Hijjr)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ Alif-Lam-Ra; these are verses of the Book and the bright Qur’an. 1 The unbelievers would haply like to wish that they had submitted (and become Muslim). 2 Leave them to eat and enjoy life and let false hopes amuse them. They will soon come to know. 3 Whenever We destroyed a town, a definite term had previously been decreed for it. 4 No people can outstrip the term for its destruction nor can it delay it. 5 And they say: O thou unto whom the Reminder is revealed, lo! thou art indeed a madman! 6 Why do you not bring down the angels, if what you say is true' 7 We send not the angels down except with the truth (i.e. for torment, etc.), and in that case, they (the disbelievers) would have no respite! 8 Lo! We, even We, reveal the Reminder, and lo! We verily are its Guardian. 9 We did send messengers before thee amongst the religious sects of old: 10 And whenever a Messenger came to them, they never failed to mock him. 11 We place in the hearts of sinners (disbelief). 12 So, they will not believe in it: The example of former people is there. 13 Yet even had We opened to them a gateway to heaven and they had ascended, on and on, up to it, 14 They would say, "Our eyes have only been dazzled. Rather, we are a people affected by magic." 15
