۞ We had earlier given Abraham true direction, for We knew him well. 51 Recall, when he said to his father and his people: "What are these images to which you are devoutly clinging?" 52 They said, 'We found our fathers serving them.' 53 He said: "You and your fathers were in clear error." 54 They said, "Have you come to us with truth, or are you of those who jest?" 55 He said: "Nay, but your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth which He created and to that I bear witness before you. 56 And, by God, I shall assuredly outwit your idols, after you have gone away turning your backs.' 57 So he made them into fragments, except a large one among them, that they might return to it [and question]. 58 (When the people came to the temple and saw the broken idols) they asked each other, "Who has done this to our gods? He certainly is an unjust person". 59 'We have heard a young man called Abraham mention them' they replied. 60 They said, "Then bring him before the eyes of the people, that they may bear witness." 61 (On Abraham's arrival) they said: "Abraham, are you he who has done this to our gods?" 62 He answered: "Rather it was this supreme one who has done it. So ask them, if they can speak." 63 Then they turned to themselves and said: Surely you yourselves are the unjust; 64 Then they reversed themselves, [saying], "You have already known that these do not speak!" 65 (So Abraham) said: "Then why do you worship something apart from God that cannot profit you or do you harm? 66 Fie upon you and upon all that you worship instead of God! Will you not, then, use your reason?" 67 They said, "Burn him and protect your gods, If ye do (anything at all)!" 68 We said, “O fire, become cool and peaceful upon Ibrahim.” 69 And they wanted to harm him, but We made them the worst losers. 70 And We rescued him and Lut towards the land which We have blessed for the entire world. 71 We bestowed Isaac and then Jacob on him as an additional boon and We made all of them righteous. 72 And We made them chiefs who guide by Our command, and We inspired in them the doing of good deeds and the right establishment of worship and the giving of alms, and they were worshippers of Us (alone). 73 And to Lut, too, We gave Judgment and Knowledge, and We saved him from the town which practised abominations: truly they were a people given to Evil, a rebellious people. 74 And We caused him to enter into Our mercy; verily he was of the righteous. 75
