۞ We gave Abraham aforetime his rectitude -- for We knew him -- 51 When he said to his father and his people, "What are these statues to which you are devoted?" 52 They answered: "We found our forefathers worshipping them." 53 He said: Verily ye and your fathers were in plain error. 54 They said: "Have you brought us the truth, or are you one of those who play about?" 55 He said: Aye! your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth Who created them, and as to that I am of the witnesses. 56 "And by Allah, I have a plan for your idols - after ye go away and turn your backs".. 57 So he smashed them up to pieces with the exception of the biggest, so that they may turn to it. 58 They said: Who has done this to our gods? Most surely he is one of the unjust. 59 They said: We heard a youth speak of them, who is called Ibrahim. 60 They said: bring him then before the eyes of the people, haply they may bear witness. 61 "Did you do this to our gods, O Abraham?" they enquired. 62 He said, "Rather, this - the largest of them - did it, so ask them, if they should [be able to] speak." 63 So they turned to themselves and said, "Surely ye are the ones in the wrong!" 64 But then they relapsed into their former way of thinking and said: "Thou knowest very well that these [idols] cannot speak!" 65 He said: 'Would you then worship that, instead of Allah, which can neither help nor harm you? 66 Woe to you for what you worship instead of God. Have you no understanding?" 67 They said: burn him, and succour your gods, if ye will be doing. 68 We said: O fire, be coolness and peace for Abraham, 69 and whereas they sought to do evil unto him, We caused them to suffer the greatest loss: 70 We saved him and Lot, and brought them to the land which We had blessed for all the worlds. 71 And We bestowed him Ishaq, and Yaqub the grandson; and We made all of them worthy of Our proximity. 72 And We made them leaders, guiding (men) by Our Command, and We sent them inspiration to do good deeds, to establish regular prayers, and to practise regular charity; and they constantly served Us (and Us only). 73 To Lot We gave knowledge and wisdom and saved him from the people of the town who were committing indecent acts. They were certainly a bad and sinful people. 74 and We admitted him into Our mercy; he was of the righteous. 75
