And the chieftains of his folk, who disbelieved and denied the meeting of the Hereafter, and whom We had made soft in the life of the world, said: This is only a mortal like you, who eateth of that whereof ye eat and drinketh of that ye drink. 33 If you obey a mortal like yourselves, you shall be lost. 34 Does he give you a promise that when you are dead and turned to dust and bones, you will be raised to life again? 35 ۞ Such a promise will never come true. 36 There exists only our present life: we die and we live [but once], and shall never be raised up again. 37 He is just a man who invents a lie about God; we cannot believe in him." 38 He said: my Lord! vindicate for they belie me. 39 He replied: 'Before long, by the morning, they shall be remorseful' 40 So the shriek seized them in truth, and We made them as [plant] stubble. Then away with the wrongdoing people. 41 Thereafter, after them, We produced other generations; 42 No community can anticipate their term, nor can they lay behind. 43 Thereafter We sent Our apostles, successively. So oft as there came unto a community their apostle, they belied him, so We made them follow one another, and We made them bywords; so away with a people who believe not! 44 We then sent Moosa and his brother Haroon, with Our signs and a clear proof. 45 to Pharaoh and his Council, but they were very proud, and they were a tyrannical nation. 46 And they said: Shall we put faith in two mortals like ourselves, and whose folk are servile unto us? 47 So they rejected them and became of those who were destroyed. 48 And indeed We gave Moosa the Book, that they may attain guidance. 49 And We made the son of Mary and his mother a portent, and We gave them refuge on a height, a place of flocks and watersprings. 50
