The Thamud (people) rejected the messengers. 141 Their brother Salih said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 I ask of you no reward. My reward is with none but the Lord of the Universe. 145 Will you be left in what is here, secure [from death], 146 in the midst of gardens and fountains, 147 And tilled fields and heavy-sheathed palm-trees, 148 You hew dwellings in mountains and exult in that. 149 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me; 150 and do not follow the biddings of those that go to excesses 151 Who cause corruption in the land and do not amend." 152 They said, 'Thou art merely one of those that are bewitched; 153 You are but a human like ourselves. Produce for us a sign, if you are of the truthful' 154 Replied he: "This she-camel shall have a share of water, and you shall have a share of water, on the days appointed [therefor]; 155 Do not molest her lest the chastisement of an Awesome Day should seize you." 156 But they killed her, and then they became regretful. 157 So the torment overtook them. Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And indeed your Lord – only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
