The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 when their brother Salih said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? 142 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 143 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 "Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] in the midst of what you have here and now? 146 among gardens and fountains, 147 "And corn-fields and date-palms with spathes near breaking (with the weight of fruit)? 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 and pay no heed to the counsel of those who are given to excesses 151 and spread mischief in the land rather than set things right." 152 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched! 153 “You are just a human like us; therefore bring some sign if you are truthful.” 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. She will have her share of water as you have your share, each on a certain day. 155 And touch her not with ill lest there come on you the retribution of an awful day. 156 But they hamstrung her and then regretted it. 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 And most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
