The Thamud belied the sent ones 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 Verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 I ask of you no reward. My reward is with none but the Lord of the Universe. 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 amidst the gardens, springs, 147 farms, and palm-trees in thick groves, 148 “And you carve out dwellings in the mountains, with skill?” 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 And do not obey the order of the transgressors, 151 who do corruption in the earth, and set not things aright.' 152 They replied: 'Surely, you are one of those bewitched. 153 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!" 154 (Saleh) said: "Here is a she-camel. She has a right of drinking water, and you have a right of drinking it on appointed turns. 155 and do her no harm, lest suffering befall you on an awesome day!" 156 But they hamstrung her, and then were penitent. 157 And the punishment seized them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers. 158 Your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. 159
