The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: fear ye not? 142 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 143 Have fear of God and obey me. 144 “And I do not ask from you any fee for it; my reward is only upon the Lord Of The Creation.” 145 Will you be left secure in what is here; 146 In gardens and fountains, 147 And cornfields and palm-trees having fine spadices? 148 And dwellings hewed out of mountains ingeniously? 149 "But fear Allah and obey me; 150 Do not obey the orders of the transgressors 151 Who make mischief in the land and do not act aright. 152 They said: "You are only of those bewitched! 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 Replied he: "This she-camel shall have a share of water, and you shall have a share of water, on the days appointed [therefor]; 155 Do not treat her unkindly or the punishment of a grievous day will fall on you." 156 But they hamstrung her; and on the morrow were repentant, 157 So the torment took hold of them: verily herein is a sign, but most of them are not believers. 158 Your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. 159
