The Thamud (people) rejected the messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 I do not ask any recompense of you for this. My reward is due from none but the Lord of all the worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in this here, 146 Within gardens and springs 147 The fields of corn and date-palm trees with soft and tender spathes, 148 Though ye hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful? 149 So be mindful of God and listen to me. 150 Do not obey the orders of the transgressors 151 who corrupt in the earth, and do not reform' 152 They replied: 'Surely, you are one of those bewitched. 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. She will have her share of water as you have your share, each on a certain day. 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they hamstrung her, then regretted; 157 and the chastisement seized them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate. 159
