(The tribe of) Thamud denied the messengers (of Allah) 141 when their brother Salih said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 142 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 And I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds: 145 Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] -- 146 in the midst of gardens and fountains, 147 “And fields and palm-trees, with delicate tendrils?” 148 And you hew houses out of the mountains exultingly; 149 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me; 150 and obey not the commandment of the prodigal 151 Who work corruption in the land and rectify not. 152 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched! 153 thou art naught but a mortal, like us; then produce a sign, if thou art one of the truthful.' 154 Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink. 155 Do not treat her unkindly or the punishment of a grievous day will fall on you." 156 But they cruelly slaughtered her - and then they had cause to regret it: 157 and the punishment seized them. Surely, in that there is a sign. Yet most of them do not believe. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
