The Thamud (people) rejected the messengers. 141 when their brother Salih said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? 142 I have been sent as a trusted messenger to you. 143 So keep your duty to Allah and obey me. 144 “And I do not ask from you any fee for it; my reward is only upon the Lord Of The Creation.” 145 “Will you be left peacefully in these favours over here?” 146 in the midst of gardens and fountains, 147 and cornfields, and palm-trees laden with fruit -- 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 And do not obey the bidding of the extravagant, 151 who corrupt in the earth, and do not reform' 152 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched! 153 You are a mere mortal like us. Show us a miracle if you are telling the Truth". 154 He said: (Behold) this she-camel. She hath the right to drink (at the well), and ye have the right to drink, (each) on an appointed day. 155 Do not molest her lest the chastisement of an Awesome Day should seize you." 156 But they hamstrung her, then regretted; 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 And verily! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. 159
