We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his nobles. He said, "I am the messenger of the Lord of the Universe," 46 but when he came to them with Our signs, they ridiculed them, 47 And We showed them not a sign except that it was greater than its sister, and We seized them with affliction that perhaps they might return [to faith]. 48 And they said, 'Sorcerer, pray to thy Lord for us by the covenant He has made with thee, and surely we shall be right-guided.' 49 But when We removed from them the chastisement, behold, they broke their troth. 50 And the Pharaoh said to his people: "O people, is not mine the kingdom of Egypt and these rivers that flow at my feet? Can you still not comprehend? 51 Nay! I am better than this fellow, who is contemptible, and who can hardly speak distinctly: 52 Why have bracelets of gold not been given to him and why have some angels not accompanied him?" 53 In this way he fooled his people and they obeyed him: they were a rebellious people. 54 So, when they had angered Us, We took vengeance on them, and We drowned them all together; 55 And made them a precedent and example for posterity. 56
