The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
I swear by the star when it goes down. 1 Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred, 2 Nor does he speak out of desire. 3 It is naught but revelation that is revealed, 4 He was taught by one Mighty in Power, 5 by the great mighty one (Gabriel), 6 And he is in the highest part of the horizon. 7 Then he drew near, then he bowed 8 Until a space of two bow (arcs) or even less remained, 9 so (Allah) revealed to His worshiper (Gabriel) that which he revealed (to Prophet Muhammad). 10 The heart lied not (in seeing) what it saw. 11 So will you dispute with him over what he saw? 12 He saw Him indeed another time 13 Near Sidrat-ul-Muntaha [lote-tree of the utmost boundary (beyond which none can pass)], 14 nigh which is the Garden of the Refuge, 15 When that which shroudeth did enshroud the lote-tree, 16 His sight did not waver nor was it unduly bold. 17 and he certainly saw some of the greatest Signs of His Lord. 18 Have you considered El-Lat and El-'Uzza 19 And Manat the other third? 20 What! For you the son, and for Him the daughter? 21 This is an unfair distinction! 22 They are but names which you have named, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord! 23 Can ever man get what he desires? 24 despite the fact that [both] the life to come and this present [one] belong to God [alone]? 25
