The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the setting star, 1 That your companion is not confused, nor has he gone astray, 2 and neither does he speak out of his own desire: 3 It is only an Inspiration that is inspired. 4 Which one of mighty powers hath taught him, 5 One vigorous; and he grew clear to view 6 while he was in the highest horizon; 7 Then he drew near and hung above suspended, 8 So he was the measure of two bows or closer still. 9 Thus He revealed unto His bondman whatsoever He revealed. 10 The [servant's] heart did not give the lie to what he saw: 11 What! So do you dispute with him regarding what he saw? 12 He saw Him indeed another time 13 Near the lote-tree of the last boundary. 14 near which is the Garden of Abode. 15 When there comes to the Lote Tree, that which comes 16 The eye turned not aside nor yet was overbold. 17 and he certainly saw some of the greatest Signs of His Lord. 18 Have ye seen Lat. and 'Uzza, 19 And Manat (another idol of the pagan Arabs), the other third? 20 "What! For you the males and for Him the females?" 21 That indeed is an unfair division -- 22 these are nothing but names which you yourselves have devised, you and your forefathers. God has sent down no authority for them. They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own selves desire, even though guidance has already come to them from their Lord! 23 Or shall man have what he wishes? 24 And to God belongs the First and the Last. 25
