The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the star when it goes down, (or vanishes). 1 Your companion did not err, nor did he go astray. 2 And he speaketh not of his own desire. 3 It is no less than inspiration sent down to him: 4 He was taught by [an angel] who is mighty in power, 5 by the great mighty one (Gabriel), 6 appearing in the horizon's loftiest part, 7 then came down close 8 And was at a distance of two bows' length or (even) nearer, 9 then revealed to his servant that he revealed. 10 His heart lies not of what he saw; 11 Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he seeth? 12 For indeed he saw him at a second descent, 13 at the Lote Tree (Sidrat tree) of the ending 14 Near it is the Garden of Abode. 15 When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it]. 16 his eye swerved not; nor swept astray. 17 For truly did he see, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest! 18 Have you considered Lat and 'Uzza, 19 and about the third deity, al-Manat? 20 "What! For you the males and for Him the females?" 21 That, then, is an unjust division. 22 These are only names which you and your fathers have invented. No authority was sent down by God for them. They only follow conjecture and wish-fulfilment, even though guidance had come to them already from their Lord. 23 Can ever man get what he desires? 24 Nay! for Allah is the hereafter and the former (life). 25
