A large group from the earlier generations. 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 And the fellows on the left hand; how miserable shall the fellows on the left hand be! 41 Will be in the scorching wind and boiling water, 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: 44 Surely they had lived before in luxury, 45 and had persisted in the Great Sin. 46 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 will indeed be gathered together at a fixed time on an appointed Day. 50 Then verily ye, O ye erring, denying people. 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 and shall drink boiling water on top of that. 54 drink it as the most insatiably thirsty camels drink!" 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 It is He who created you, then why do you not affirm the truth? 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable, 60 from changing your Forms and creating you (again) in (forms) that ye know not. 61 You have surely known of the first creation. Why then, will you not remember! 62 Have you thought about what crops you plant? 63 Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer? 64 If We willed, surely We would make it chaff, so that ye would be left wondering. 65 "Verily, we are ruined! 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it? 72 We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy. 73 Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty. 74
