A company of the former peoples 39 And a multitude from the later generations. 40 And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand? 41 Will be in the scorching wind and boiling water, 42 and the shadows of black smoke 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 and had persisted in the Great Sin. 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 Or our fathers of yore? 48 (Muhammad), say, "All the ancient and later generations 49 will indeed be gathered together at a fixed time on an appointed Day. 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 You shall fill your bellies with it, 53 And shall be drinkers thereon of boiling water. 54 Lapping it up like female camels raging of thirst with disease." 55 Such will be their welcome on the Day of Judgement. 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 that We will change you and cause you to grow again in a way you do not know. 61 And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Do you make it grow or is it We who make it grow? 64 If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder, 65 "Verily, we are ruined! 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 Have you ever considered the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 Extol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sustainer's mighty name! 74
