a large throng from the ancients, 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 and the shadows of black smoke 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 and before that they lived at ease, 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 And also our forefathers?" 48 Say: The first and the last, 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 and on top of this you will drink boiling water 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Behold! that which ye emit. 58 did you create it or did We? 59 We have incorporated death in your constitution, and We shall not be hindered 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? 69 Had We wanted, We could have made it salty. Why then do you not give thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire you kindle? 71 Is it you who have produced its tree or is it We who have produced it? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty. 74
