a multitude of the ancients, 39 And a crowd of the later. 40 And those on the Left Hand Who will be those on the Left Hand? 41 Amidst scorching wind and scalding water. 42 and under the shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cold nor graceful in shape. 44 They were endowed with good things 45 And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! 46 It was they who said, "Shall we be resurrected after we die and have turned into dust and bones? 47 (We) and our fore-fathers of yore?” 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 "Then will ye truly,- O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!- 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 And will fill your bellies therewith; 53 and on top of this you will drink boiling water 54 "So you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!" 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Have you seen sperm? 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 From replacing you with others or raising you in a way you do not know. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Have you ever considered the seed which you cast upon the soil? 63 Is it you who cause them to grow or do We? 64 If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder, 65 Lo! we are laden with debt! 66 nay, we have been robbed!' 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We? 69 If We will, We would make it bitter, why then do you not give thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire that you kindle. 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We! it is We Who made it a reminder and a provision unto the campers. 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
